Welcome to the Interprofessional Clinical Learning Unit (IPCLU) Project website. Building Clinical Education Capacity with Interprofessional Clinical Learning Units across the Continuum of Care is a collaborative project led by the University of Alberta and Alberta Health Services.
Direct care IPCLUs endeavour to bridge the current gaps between academic and clinical roles in an interprofessional health care setting. An IPCLU occurs when students, faculty and patient care team members work together to enhance the clinical education capacity of units and facilities for all involved.
The Centre for Advancement of Interprofessional Education (CAIPE) in the UK provides the following definition for Interprofessional Education (IPE): "Interprofessional Education occurs when two or more professions learn with, from and about each other to improve collaboration and the quality of care"(CAIPE, 2002).
This project aims to design and implement IPCLUs in three different patient care contexts on Unit 53 at the Royal Alexandra Hospital (acute care), Unit 3A at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital (rehabilitation) and CapitalCare Norwood (complex care). It focuses on patient care team members, faculty and students from Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Language Pathology, Social Work, Dietetics, Respiratory Therapy, Kinesiology, Recreation Therapy, Clinical Psychology, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Dentistry and Dental Hygiene, and other disciplines if identified.
As the IPCLU Project continues to develop, we look forward to sharing the project results and findings with you.
